IN SEARCH OF A GOLD STAR
oil on canvas (2026)
In Search of a Gold Star is a three-painting series that reflects on my transition into adulthood and the shifting values that have shaped my sense of self. As an adolescent, I measured my worth through achievement and conventional markers of success. Over time, I came to recognize that these metaphorical “gold stars” could never provide the lasting fulfillment I was searching for, and that it was unsustainable to tie my happiness to external validation.
This body of work traces the shift from seeking identity through accomplishment to finding meaning through community, creativity, and authentic relationships. Each painting represents a different stage of that journey: the confidence and wholeness of childhood, the fragmentation that accompanies the pursuit of socially defined success, and the gradual realignment of values towards a life built with greater intention. Ultimately this series questions the cultural narratives that encourage us to equate achievement with self-worth, and explores how a sense of belonging is not earned through accomplishments, but rather through meaningful connection
